For more than 75 years, the AuSable River Canoe Marathon has been one of Northern Michigan’s most cherished traditions. Each summer, paddlers from across the country gather in Grayling to test their endurance, determination, and teamwork on the 120-mile journey to Oscoda.

First-Time Spectator Guide
The AuSable River Canoe Marathon isn’t just one of the world’s toughest canoe races—it’s often called the world’s toughest spectator race. Many fans spend the entire night following competitors from Grayling to Oscoda as teams paddle 120 miles down the AuSable River.

Race Start
The race begins in downtown Grayling with the famous LeMans-style start. Racers sprint from the starting line to their canoes before beginning the journey to Oscoda.

Arrive Early
  • Downtown Grayling fills quickly.
  • Plan to arrive at least 1-2 hours before race start.
  • Bring lawn chairs if you plan to stay in one location.

Following the Race OvernightMany spectators follow racers to several viewing locations throughout the night.
