Bodily Injury Coverage
What it is
Bodily injury liability coverage is a key component of Michigan auto insurance that helps pay for medical expenses, lost wages, and legal fees if you are found at fault in an accident that results in injury or death to another person. This coverage protects you from significant out-of-pocket costs and potential lawsuits by compensating the injured parties up to the policy's limit.
What it isn't
Bodily injury coverage does not pay for your own medical expenses or injuries sustained in an accident. It also does not cover damage to your vehicle or other property. For your medical costs, personal injury protection (PIP) is required under Michigan's no-fault insurance system. To cover vehicle damage, you'll need collision or comprehensive insurance.
Our Recommendation
$250,000 per person / $500,000 per occurrence or more.
Add up your assets, double that number and go to the next limit above your number. With our agency, we would say no less than $250,000 per person. Most any serious losses where you injure the other party will add up to this amount in a hurry. If you don't have enough, the court can order for it to come out of your pocket. To add your assets easily, go here: Insurance Needs Assessment Tool
Example: if you own a home worth $300,000, have $80,000 in retirement and other assets of about $30,000, your number is $410,000*2 = $820,000. We would say you should have no less than $500,000, but would recommend $1million.
