PIP: the coverage that makes Michigan, Michigan.

Personal Injury Protection is the heart of Michigan no-fault — your own policy paying your medical bills after a crash, no matter whose fault it was.

The thirty-second version

After an accident in Michigan, you don't wait to find out whose insurance pays your hospital bill — yours does. That's no-fault, and PIP is the part that does the paying: medical care, a portion of lost wages (work loss), replacement services, and attendant care for serious injuries. In exchange, Michigan limits your ability to sue other drivers except in serious cases.

What PIP includes beyond medical

  • Work loss — a large percentage of lost income for up to three years, capped monthly. (Retirees can often exclude this and save.)
  • Replacement services — daily-life help you now must pay for: lawn, snow, childcare, up to a daily cap.
  • Attendant care — in-home care for serious injuries; the benefit that made unlimited PIP famous, and the one capped levels cap.
  • Survivor benefits — income replacement for dependents after a fatal accident.
Since July 2020 you choose your PIP medical level — six options, each with eligibility rules tied to your health insurance. That decision deserves its own page: all six levels, compared honestly.
