Boat VIN, HIN or registration number?
People often search for a “boat VIN lookup,” but the boat identifier is a HIN. Use the 12-character number on the hull, not the registration painted on the bow or the engine serial number. The trailer uses a different, usually 17-character VIN.
The tool reads the code locally. To identify the company behind the first three characters, use the Coast Guard manufacturer directory linked below. A manufacturer code does not identify the boat model or establish ownership.

- Identifies the boat. Compare the hull marking with the title or registration.
- State registration number
- Issued for registration; not a substitute for the HIN.
- Engine serial number
- Identifies the motor, which can have a different year from the hull.
- Trailer VIN
- Identifies the trailer rather than the boat.
How boat model years and manufacture dates differ
In the current format, characters 9–10 encode the certification or manufacture month and year digit. Characters 11–12 give the model year. The two dates are not necessarily the same.
Example: ABC12345H485 has a date code of H4 and model-year code 85. It reads as August 1984 and model year 1985. This is a format example, not a verified boat record. Older HIN formats use a different date layout; the result identifies which one was recognized.
Can a HIN lookup show boat value or ownership?
No. This decoder does not search owners, liens, accidents, theft records or NADA/J.D. Power values. A valuation needs the actual model, condition, engine, equipment and market information. Title questions belong with the relevant registration or titling authority.
If the HIN is missing or disagrees with the paperwork, preserve the original markings and ask the state or manufacturer for help. A successful format check is not proof of a legitimate identity.
