ORV and side-by-side insurance

Trail machines create real liability—even when they never touch a public road.

ATVs, UTVs, side-by-sides and dirt bikes can injure riders, passengers and bystanders while also carrying expensive accessories. Registration, DNR licensing, trail permits and insurance are separate questions; we help sort out the coverage side.

Coverage map

Options worth reviewing

These are common building blocks, not a promise that every carrier offers every option. Your quote and policy forms control the actual coverage.

01

Off-road liability

Helps address covered bodily injury and property-damage claims arising from operation of the ORV.

02

Collision and comprehensive

Can protect the unit from covered impact, rollover, theft, fire, weather and vandalism losses.

03

Medical payments

Available coverage may help with eligible medical expenses for a rider or passenger following a covered accident.

04

Uninsured motorist protection

Some policies offer protection when another operator causes a covered injury but lacks adequate insurance.

05

Accessories and custom equipment

Winches, plows, roofs, doors, tracks, lighting, wheels and other upgrades can quickly exceed an included limit.

06

Trailer and transport

The trailer and the ORV are separate pieces of property. Confirm how each is insured while stored and in transit.

Fine print that matters

Where generic coverage falls short

Youth operators

Age, supervision, safety certificates and household operators can affect eligibility. Michigan DNR operating rules still apply.

Road or shoulder use

Local ordinances and permitted road use do not automatically turn an ORV policy into auto coverage.

Business or farm use

Plowing, property maintenance, guiding or work use should be disclosed; personal recreational coverage may not respond the same way.

Aftermarket value

Keep receipts and photos for major accessories and verify the policy limit before a claim.

Common questions

ORVs & side-by-sides insurance FAQs

Does homeowners insurance cover an ATV or side-by-side?

Home policies commonly limit motorized-vehicle coverage, especially away from the residence premises. A dedicated ORV policy is designed for the operating exposure.

Does an ORV trail permit include insurance?

No. Licensing, registration and trail-permit requirements are separate from an insurance policy.

Can a plow or tracks be insured?

Often, but included accessory limits vary. Provide the equipment description and installed value when requesting a quote.

Important: This guide is general information, not a binder or policy interpretation. Coverage depends on the carrier, policy form, endorsements, limits, exclusions and confirmed use of the unit.
